Who Were INXS?

INXS hailed from the pubs of Australia which is part of the reason the band never comfortably fit in with a new wave. Even when they branched out Into Synth Pop their early recordings were underpinned by a hard stonesy beat and lead singer Michael Hutchence’s Jagger – esque strut. This is what made Inxs into international superstars in the 80’s,. By 1987 the group had finely tuned its sleek stylish groove and the album Kick became a multimillion dollar seller.

What Went Wrong After Everything Was So Right?
INXS continued to produce hit albums until the mid-90’s, when they took a break. They made a comeback in 1997 and their release put them back on top of the charts. Set to undertake a world tour, the sudden death of frontman Michael Hutchence brought it all to an end so instead of a massive comeback with a hit album, the five remaining members of the band were left to ask why Michael would take his own life? INXS bassist, Garry Beers unravels both the band’s history and his own musical journey.

Garry Beers: Early Life and Musical Genesis
Born Garry William Beers in Manly, Sydney, Australia, Garry was introduced to the world of music during his high school years. He initially picked up the acoustic guitar and formed a band named Legolas Elvin Warrior with his schoolmates. A twist of fate led him to switch to the bass guitar, a decision that would shape his future profoundly. This transition was serendipitous, as it paved the way for his introduction to Andrew Farriss. Together, they formed the band Dr. Dolphin, which eventually evolved into The Farriss Brothers, and later, the globally acclaimed INXS.
INXS: Global Domination
INXS, with Garry Beers anchoring the rhythm section, emerged as a powerhouse in the rock and new wave scenes of the 80s and 90s. The band’s unique blend of rock, pop, and dance elements resonated with audiences worldwide. Garry’s bass lines became the backbone of many chart-topping hits, including “Need You Tonight,” “Devil Inside,” “Never Tear Us Apart,” and “Suicide Blonde.” His contributions weren’t limited to performance; Garry co-wrote several tracks, notably “Listen Like Thieves,” “Don’t Change,” and “Perfect Strangers,” showcasing his prowess as a songwriter.
Infectious Grooves and Dynamic Stage Presence
The synergy between Garry and drummer Jon Farriss was pivotal in crafting the tight, infectious grooves that became INXS’s signature.
