A Founding Force Behind Little River Band

When Australians talk about the great success stories in rock music, Little River Band inevitably sits near the top of the list. As one of the first Australian bands to truly conquer America, the group’s rich harmonies, impeccable musicianship and timeless songs became the soundtrack to millions of lives. At the heart of that success was original drummer Derek Pellicci, whose musical journey has been driven by passion, curiosity and an unwavering commitment to serving the song.

Yesterday and Today

In this conversation, Derek reflects on a remarkable career that stretches from London’s post-war streets to sold-out arenas across the United States, before arriving at an unexpected new chapter as a songwriter embracing artificial intelligence.

From London Migrant to Aspiring Musician

Born in London in 1953, Pellicci emigrated to Australia with his family in 1961 as one of the famous “Ten Pound Poms.” Music wasn’t central to family life until one unforgettable moment changed everything. Hearing The Beatles’ “She Loves You” on a transistor radio was, in his words, an epiphany. Seeing the band in Melbourne shortly afterwards sealed his fate. From that day forward, he knew he wanted to become a drummer. Hours of relentless practice followed, laying the foundations for a career that would span more than five decades.

Mississippi Becomes Little River Band

Like many musicians of the era, Pellicci paid his dues playing with numerous Melbourne bands before joining Mississippi in 1972. The group featured extraordinary vocal harmonies and exceptional musicianship, but despite early promise, it wasn’t until the arrival of Glenn Shorrock and manager Glenn Wheatley that everything changed. A roadside sign pointing towards the Victorian town of Little River inspired the band’s new name, and with it began one of Australia’s greatest musical success stories.

Conquering America One Hit at a Time

Few bands have achieved what Little River Band accomplished during the late ’70s and early ’80s. The group scored 13 Billboard Top 40 hits in America, opening for legendary artists including Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, Santana, Heart, Steve Miller Band and the Doobie Brothers. Pellicci remembers the experience as an education unlike any other, standing side stage each night studying some of the finest performers in rock history while LRB steadily built an enormous following of its own. He recalls touring relentlessly, driving hundreds of miles between shows, often arriving just in time to perform before heading straight to the next city.

Stories Behind Little River Band's Classic Songs

Derek offers fascinating insights into the creation of some of Little River Band’s biggest hits. He reveals that “Reminiscing” proved surprisingly difficult to record, requiring numerous sessions before finally coming together with a simple conga overdub that completed the arrangement. He also shares why “Lonesome Loser” immediately stood out and  he reflects on working alongside legendary Beatles producer George Martin.

Discovering a Passion for Songwriting

Although Derek stepped away from Little River Band in the mid-’80s and later reunited briefly with the group, he admits his biggest regret wasn’t leaving the band—it was waiting too long to embrace songwriting. Encouraged by collaborators over the years, he gradually developed as a lyricist, discovering a love for storytelling that had first surfaced in school literature classes. Instead of writing conventional love songs, Pellicci found himself drawn to songs about society, individuality and the human condition.

Embracing AI and Reinventing His Creativity

Perhaps the most compelling part of oue conversation centres on his latest creative reinvention. His new solo album, Welcome to the Human Race, has sparked discussion because it embraces AI technology in the creative process. Pellicci is  candid about the criticism he has received, arguing that artificial intelligence is simply another tool—much like drum machines, digital editing and studio technology before it. What matters most, he insists, remains the songwriting, the ideas and the emotional honesty behind the music.

A Legacy That Continues to Evolve

This episode of A Breath of Fresh Air is far more than a conversation about Little River Band. It’s the story of a musician who has continually reinvented himself, embraced change without losing his artistic integrity, and proves that creativity has no age limit. Whether you’re a lifelong Little River Band fan or simply fascinated by the creative process, Derek Pellicci’s story is one of resilience, innovation and an enduring love of music.
