Multi talented Steve Hackett is probably best known as lead guitarist with the band Genesis during the 70’s. But there’s so much more to this man who continues to work extensively across pop, blues, jazz fusion, world and classical music. His 30 year long solo career has seen him release some prolific offerings including an autobiography entitled ‘A Genesis In My Bed’. His latest album, ‘Surrender of Silence’ tells stories influenced by a recent trip to Russia and showcases musicians from all corners of the earth. I caught up with Steve whilst on tour in Wales. John Lennon Remembered On What Would Have Been His 81st Birthday
The third annual ‘Dear John’ concert is on this week and again boasts a fantastic line-up of artists who’ll all be performing tributes to the legendary Beatle who was shot and killed in New York City in 1980, when he was just 40 years old. You can join the live-stream, which will be raising funds for the charity, War Child, by buying tickets from the website veeps.com. Here’s a couple of my favourites – John doing ‘Stand By Me’ and Peter Frampton, who is one of the concert performers, with a brilliant rendition of ‘Norwegian Wood’. Read more
50 Years Since Teaser And The Firecat
The album, Teaser And The Firecat’ came just 10 months after Cat Steven’s breakthrough album, Tea For The Tillerman’. Teaser became the biggest selling record in many countries around the world, including in Australia, in 1972. As part of the celebration, there’s a remaster out this week and the super deluxe edition includes 23 live performances from 1971 including a new, never-before-heard version of ‘Bitterblue’. Valerie Holiday is the longest serving member of the iconic girl group whose massive hit ‘When Will I See You Again’ hit the top of the charts in 1973 and made the three glamorous, ebony women, household names. Aussie Musician Sam Teskey Releases Solo Album Reminiscent of Pink Floyd.
One of Australia’s favourite bands is The Teskey Bros. The boys have been heavily influenced by 70’s blues and soul and seem to produce a sound together that only siblings are able to achieve. Lead guitarist, Sam Teskey has this week released his debut solo album inspired by the great psychedelic sounds of the late 60’s and 70’s – bands like Pink Floyd.
